Meet Artist-in-Residence Jenn Houle

Meet Artist-in-Residence Jenn Houle

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the amazing processes that take place in the natural world, including how we human beings alter, define, and categorize nature. I also love reading and watching science fiction to find how others imagine the possible outcomes for our species and others. And, of course, I love looking at, talking about and making artwork! I go to galleries, First Fridays, museums and meet regularly with the Boston Critique Group to talk about our work which always fuels my practice.

What is your medium of choice?

This is a tough one! I think all things considered I am a painter at heart. I do love that medium, thinking about its possibilities, limitations and language. When I do sculptural work and installation I often ‘paint’ with cast shadows and colored light.

What is the most important theme that your work revolves around?

Our connection to the natural world and the importance of thinking about and preserving it.

How do you spend your time when not working in the studio?

Hiking, camping, swimming, and hanging with friends, family, my cat Maxine and husband Stevie.
